UBITECH Awarded LDT4SSC Cascading Grant to Advance Cross-Border Digital Twin Interconnection

UBITECH has been awarded a cascading grant from LDT4SSC — Local Digital Twins for Smart and Sustainable Communities — to deliver its pilot project, MUNICIPAL. The award positions UBITECH at the forefront of a growing European effort to make city-level digital twins interoperable, turning isolated municipal data platforms into a connected, AI-ready infrastructure for urban decision-making. MUNICIPAL is one of two sub-projects selected for funding under the LDT4SSC Open Call-1, focusing exclusively on Work Strand 1: demonstrating the interconnection of existing Local Digital Twins. Coordinated by UBITECH, the consortium brings together seven partners from Cyprus, Greece, Denmark and Spain around a shared engineering challenge — making digital twins built on different stacks, standards and governance models talk to one another reliably and securely. The MUNICIPAL pilot will link the MiMurcia and iniCOSIA local digital twin platforms via the SIMPL/CEEDS interoperability framework, enabling secure, cross-border data exchange between Murcia and Nicosia.

LDT4SSC, funded by the Digital Europe Programme under Grant Agreement number 101226211, supports cities, regions and public authorities across Europe in developing, connecting and advancing Local Digital Twins, enabling AI-supported decision-making for a greener, more inclusive future. Its first Open Call backed pilots demonstrating how existing Local Digital Twins can interconnect to form a European-scale network, enabling cross-border data exchange and multi-city optimisation.

MUNICIPAL’s core technical objective is to advance interoperable digital twin solutions that let cities securely exchange information and collaborate across urban ecosystems. By building on common standards and data-driven architectures, the project aims to strengthen decision-making and public services across mobility, energy efficiency, urban planning, environmental management and resource optimisation — domains where fragmented, siloed data has historically limited what any single city’s digital twin can do on its own.

At the heart of MUNICIPAL is the Murcia–Nicosia pilot, which connects the MiMurcia and iniCOSIA local digital twin platforms through the SIMPL/CEEDS interoperability framework. The integration is designed to share complementary LDT services across borders, combining Murcia’s well-being and urban services data with Nicosia’s energy and mobility IoT capabilities — a concrete test case for what federated, standards-based digital twin infrastructure can deliver at city scale.

The project’s kick-off meeting, hosted by the City Council of Murcia on 7 and 8 July, brought the consortium together to align on objectives, implementation approach and planned activities. Partners also had the opportunity to explore Murcia’s smart city ecosystem first-hand, including the MiMurcia digital twin platform and the city’s Single Monitoring Centre (CEUS), along with its experience integrating data across municipal services.
