The second and final contractual review meeting for the UNICORN H2020 co-funded research project (https://unicorn-project.eu/) took place in Brussels on February 4, 2020. The UNICORN consortium successfully presented the results of the work of the project during the last 18 months of project (from M19 up until M36). UBITECH, as the leader of WP3 entitled Orchestration and Resource Management, presented the updates in the technical architecture and the technical highlights of the UNICORN platform. UBITECH also presented its proof of concept demonstrator, utilizing the UNICORN platform for the multi-Cloud deployment of its CryptoPhone Voice-over-IP secure telephony solution, showcasing the simplified design, deployment and management of secure and elastic – by design – multi-Cloud services. This was achieved by developing a policy and security aware, multi-cloud orchestrator that combines resource management, containerized services deployment over microVMs, and constant policy enforcement for managing optimized elasticity (developed mainly by UBITECH). UBITECH contributing also in the dissemination of and the increase of the general awareness about the UNICORN by participating at the DockerCon 2019 (San Francisco, USA) as a Copper Sponsor and demonstrating its MAESTRO Orchestrator, that constitutes UBITECH’s commercial offering of the UNICORN platform incorporating some of the UNICORN platform’s components developed by UBITECH. Finally, UBITECH has supported most of the twelve validation contest winners SMEs to benefit from the UNICORN platform in the frame of the development and deployment of their services and has got great feedback about the improvements and added-value features that the UNICORN platform needs, going the extra mile and implementing the most of them before the final review.

UBITECH undertakes the coordination of ASCAPE Research and Innovation Action on Big Data and Machine Learning technologies for the support of cancer patients quality of life
UBITECH is hosting the kick-off meeting, in Athens, Greece (January 28-29, 2020), of the ASCAPE Research and Innovation Action, officially started on January 1st, 2020. The project is funded by European Commission under Horizon 2020 Programme (Grant Agreement No. 875351) and spans on the period January 2020 – December 2022. The ASCAPE project aims to take advantage of the recent ICT advances in Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to support cancer patients’ quality of life and health status. To achieve its objective, ASCAPE will create an open AI infrastructure that will enable health stakeholders (hospitals, research institutions, companies, etc.) to deploy an edge-node locally and execute the AI algorithmson their private data without the need to send their data outside their domain. Any new knowledge produced by this process will be sent back to the open AI infrastructure. This way the knowledge will be shared among everyone and the medical data will remain private. With this feature, ASCAPE is aiming at democratizing access to cancer support. In particular, with ASCAPE even less developed countries or small healthcare providers (small rural hospitals) that do not possess large amounts of medical data, can connect to ASCAPE and benefit from its collective knowledge.
UBITECH kicks off the PolicyCLOUD Innovation Action on evidence-based policy management through Cloud Environments and Data Lifecycle Management
UBITECH is participating at the kick-off meeting, in Madrid, Spain (January 21-22, 2020), of the PolicyCLOUD Innovation Action, officially started on January 1st, 2020. The project is funded by European Commission under Horizon 2020 Programme (Grant Agreement No. 870675) and spans on the period January 2020 – December 2022. The PolicyCLOUD aims to deliver a unique integrated environment addressing the full lifecycle of policy management: modelling, monitoring, enforcing, simulation, analysis and compliance. The environment will utilize the capabilities offered by the European Cloud Initiative, with an emphasis on data analysis to facilitate evidence-based policy making. PolicyCLOUD introduces a pioneering approach for the development of policies “collections” to exploit collective knowledge towards policy co-creation and cross-sector optimization. The co-creation of multi-modal policies will follow an innovative modelling process for structural representation of schema-based policies.
UBITECH kicks off the DataVaults Innovation Action on secure and privacy preserving personal data storage, analysis, sharing and monetization

UBITECH is participating at the kick-off meeting, in Berlin, Germany (January 21-23, 2020), of the DataVaults Innovation Action, officially started on January 1st, 2020. The project is funded by European Commission under Horizon 2020 Programme (Grant Agreement No. 871755) and spans on the period January 2020 – December 2022. The DataVaults project aims to deliver a framework and a platform that has personal data, coming from diverse sources (wearables, web APIs, smart home sensors, personal data records, etc) in its centre and that defines secure, trusted and privacy preserving mechanismsallowing individuals to take ownership and control of their data and share them at will, through flexible data sharing and fair compensation schemes with other entities (companies or not). The overall approach will rejuvenate the personal data value chain, which could from now on be seen as a multi-sided and multi-tier ecosystem governed and regulated by smart contracts which safeguard personal data ownership, privacy and usage and attribute value to all entities that generate value within this chain and especially data owners. Within DataVaults, UBITECH drives the platform integration as well as the implementation of the Risk Management Monitor, which is a service that offers near real-time monitoring and evaluation the privacy risks of an individual, the Privacy Metrics Dashboard, which displays the information coming out of the Risk Management Monitor service and gives to each individual a clear and comprehensive view of their current and privacy exposure degrees, and the lightweight Edge Analytics Engine, responsible for running analytics at the edge, in case maximum privacy is necessary and there is only a request to share insights that can be generated in the user’s device.

UBITECH presents the FutureTPM and SDN-microSense H2020 projects at the S^2 Hack4Energy hackathon
Alongside the S^2 Hack4Energy event, the first energy related hackathon in Greece against energy-related security breaches, that takes place in Thessaloniki, Greece at October 23-24, 2019, UBITECH presents experiences, knowledge and technologies in the Digital Security domain, introducing the concepts and developments of the FutureTPM and SDN-microSense H2020 projects at the audience.
In particular, in SDN-microSense, the goal of UBITECH team is to evaluate the readiness and awareness of energy-related personnel and processes in case of cyber-attack, system failure and data breaches and to develop a risk assessment framework in the face of emerging threats and vulnerabilities. UBITECH’s Entso Veliou (Security Engineer) presents the current state of the project which is analysis of multiple security standards by multiple partners, find which part of each standard can be used and is subject to smart grids and presented the progress of UBITECH, analyzing ISO27001 information security management standard. Furthermore, he introduces the company’s plans to customize and deploy the corporate risk management suite, OLISTIC (olistic.io) to the Smart Grid Energy domain, covering the supply chains of Electrical Power and Energy Systems.
UBITECH sponsors the S^2 Hack4Energy energy-related hackathon in Thessaloniki
UBITECH supports and sponsors Hack4Energy event, the first energy related hackathon in Greece against energy-related security breaches. This two-day event takes place in Thessaloniki, Greece at October 23-24, 2019 and is organized by the SPEAR and SIT4Energy H2020 projects and is hosted on the premises of CERTH. As a matter of fact, the rapid progression of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) transforms the electrical grid into a new paradigm called Smart Grid (SG). This new reality offers valuable benefits such as distributed generation, self-monitoring, self-healing, pervasive control, two-way communication between utilities and energy consumers as well as better utilization of the existing resources. SG enables the development of smart energy-related applications, considering both efficiency potentials in the local energy production and consumption. However, at the same time, this revolution raises severe cybersecurity issues since SG is characterized by multiple heterogeneous and interconnected technologies. In this context, the SPEAR and SIT4Energy H2020 projects join forces towards co-organizing a hackathon event that will focus on innovative approaches on energy-related cyber-security and end-user engagement, respectively.
