UBITECH Joins European Clean Energy Initiative FLEXI to Advance AI-Driven Energy Flexibility Markets

UBITECH announces its participation in FLEXI (Human-centered AI and Digital Twin powered energy system integration for flexibility markets), a pioneering Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP) Action that officially launched in December 2025. The 36-month initiative, running through November 2028 under contract number CETP-2024-00290, brings together an international consortium coordinated by the University of Innsbruck (UIBK), which hosted the project’s kick-off meeting from December 17-19, 2025, in Innsbruck, Austria. FLEXI represents a transformative approach to energy management by placing citizens at the heart of the clean energy transition through cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence and large language models. The project aims to empower individuals to make informed choices and actively participate in energy management, thereby enhancing forecasting capabilities through data-driven reasoning and comprehensive citizen engagement.

At the technical core of FLEXI is the development of a federated digital twin on the demand side, designed to seamlessly integrate diverse energy resources and technologies including variable renewable sources, storage systems, electric mobility infrastructure, and crucially, citizen behavior patterns. These federated digital twins will measure the overall flexibility potential of energy resources and deliver energy flexibility services through an innovative market mechanism. The project introduces a groundbreaking Flexibility-as-a-Service business model that enables citizens to generate financial incentives by depositing their energy flexibility services into a novel market entity termed the “flexibility bank.” This approach transforms passive energy consumers into active market participants who can monetize their contribution to grid stability and renewable energy integration. FLEXI addresses five priorities under the Green Powered Future Mission Innovation framework and targets two critical Research and Innovation topics: innovative flexibility sources and demand side for flexibility markets, and system digitalisation including related tools and technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital twins.

Within the FLEXI consortium, UBITECH plays a multifaceted strategic role spanning technical architecture, market analysis, and use-case validation. The company is defining comprehensive use-case requirements and conducting detailed analysis of energy markets across multiple European Union member states and international jurisdictions, demonstrating the capabilities of interdisciplinary research alongside its associated implementation roadmap. UBITECH contributes substantially to the design of the FLEXI reference architecture and the development of both technical and business roadmaps that will guide the project’s evolution. Additionally, UBITECH leads baseline experiments and use-case development activities by integrating FLEXI services into a unified operational framework and systematically evaluating key performance indicators to ensure the project delivers measurable impact.

“FLEXI represents a significant step forward in democratizing energy markets and enabling citizens to become active contributors to the clean energy transition,” said a Dr Magda Foti (Head, Energy Digitalization Research Group). “By combining advanced AI technologies with federated digital twin architectures, we are creating practical pathways for individuals to participate in flexibility markets while supporting grid stability and renewable energy integration across Europe.”

The CETP Action aligns with European Union priorities for accelerating the clean energy transition through technological innovation, citizen engagement, and market transformation, positioning FLEXI as a catalyst for next-generation energy systems that balance decarbonization objectives with grid reliability and consumer empowerment.
