UBITECH participates at the kick-off of the COP-PILOT Innovation Action, that focuses on the delivery of a “Collaborative Open Platform for PILOTing services across emerging smart IoT and Edge computing environments.” The event took place in Athens, Greece, on January 28-29, 2025, marking the official start of a project that is set to transform the landscape of IoT and edge computing. COP-PILOT, which officially began on January 1, 2025, is funded by Horizon Europe under Grant Agreement No. 101189819 and will span from January 2025 to December 2027. COP-PILOT aims to drive the digital transformation of various industrial sectors by integrating edge computing, advanced 5G connectivity and decentralised data processing. The initiative focuses on developing an open collaborative platform that manages end-to-end services in various industrial domains. This platform is designed to effectively manage different sectors, ensuring security, automation and intelligence, while seamlessly integrating with underlying technologies.
UBITECH as the project Technical Manager and WP3 leader which is responsible for implementing the end-to-end multi-domain service orchestration i.e. the heart of the COP-PILOT project, leads this ambitious Innovation Action under the EU Horizon program which brings together 46 partners from across Europe, including industry leaders, research institutions, SMEs, and a non-profit organization. We’re building a Collaborative Open Platform (COP) to transform end-to-end orchestration across service domains.
What is COP-PILOT?
– Cross-Sector Collaboration: COP-PILOT facilitates a market-oriented, standards-aligned computing environment, fostering collaboration across diverse sectors.
– Enhanced Security, Automation, and Intelligence: The platform integrates AI-driven tools, SLA-preserving automation, and a secure infrastructure to ensure seamless and reliable service delivery.
– User-Friendly Interface: COP-PILOT introduces a novel LLM-based UI that allows complex end-user applications to be easily onboarded, eliminating user interaction with low-level orchestration APIs.
– SLA Compliance: A smart SLA preservation plugin couples every user service order with a closed-loop platform service chain, maintaining service level agreements through AI forecasting, automation, and secure service actuation.
– Secure Integration Fabric: COP-PILOT establishes a trusted central domain using open state-of-the-art and software-defined zero-trust networking to allow infrastructure owners to authenticate against COP-PILOT and use dynamic policies to map domain services to trusted consumers.
Key Innovations:
– Application-aware IoT device and data management: COP-PILOT promotes an open and distributed approach in IoT data management.
– Secure and programmable cross-domain resource and data service exposure: COP-PILOT uses software-defined zero-trust networking to establish a trusted central domain where infrastructure owners may easily authenticate and use dynamic policies to map domain services to trusted consumers.
– Ultra-scalable end-to-end service & infrastructure orchestration: COP-PILOT ensures that distributed infrastructure orchestrator instances expose an identical API towards the end-to-end service orchestrator, allowing the platform to “slice” an end-to-end service in smaller independent “sub-slices” while ensuring connectivity between them.
– Intelligent & automation tools for high-TRL vertical service onboarding and preservation: A novel LLM-based UI eliminates the need for end users to interact with low-level orchestration APIs and an AI-based SLA enforcement tool automatically chains AI-based SLA tracking services and SLA enforcement services.
Piloting Across 5 Clusters:
COP-PILOT will be tested in real-world environments through 5 pilots across 4 clusters, addressing key challenges in energy, smart cities, agriculture, and industrial manufacturing and processing, including cross-sector applications in mobility, logistics, and resource management:
1. Business Integration in Mining (Sweden)
2. Smart Sustainable IoT Solutions (Valencia, Spain)
3. Edge Intelligence for Enhancing Grid Reliability in RES-Rich Distribution Grids (Greece)
4. AgriTech Transformation and Sustainability Initiative (ATSI) (Greece)
5. Integrated IoT Solutions for Enhancing Sustainability & Efficiency in Agriculture, Recycling, and Manufacturing (Germany and Spain)
COP-PILOT is aligned with standards like ETSI OSL and ETSI TFS, while aligning with ETSI-ZSM, ETSI-MEC, and ETSI-CIM efforts. COP-PILOT’s open-source approach aims to provide a business-friendly platform and components that can be easily adopted and scaled.
