UBITECH Kicks Off LICORICE Innovation Action to Develop Reliable and Scalable Tools for Self-Sovereign Identity and Data Protection

UBITECH is proud to announce its participation in the newly launched LICORICE project, an innovative initiative funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe framework (Grant Agreement No. 101168311). LICORICE officially commenced on October 1, 2024, and will span three years until September 2027. The project’s kick-off meeting took place in Paris, hosted by TRIALOG on October 3–4, 2024. LICORICE (reLIable and sCalable tOols foR self-sovereIgn identity and data proteCtion framEwork) aims to address growing concerns around cybersecurity and data privacy in the digital age. The project will deliver advanced tools and technologies for secure online environments, digital services, and processes, supporting both individuals and businesses.

These tools are designed to empower users by giving them full control over their personal data through cryptographically secure sharing of identity credentials, in line with the revised eIDAS Regulation, the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW), and the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) standards.

The project’s toolset will encompass Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) technologies and solutions, ensuring users can securely manage and share their identity and personal information with complete privacy. LICORICE will also include advanced privacy-preserving mechanisms for secure data sharing and federated computations, guaranteeing the confidentiality and scalability of personal and industrial data.

As a research and technical partner in the LICORICE project, UBITECH will play a crucial role in defining the technical framework for secure and privacy-preserving solutions. UBITECH’s contributions include:

1) Crypto Primitives and Hardware-Based Trust Extensions: UBITECH will define rules and requirements to develop crypto primitives that safeguard secure data-sharing agreements. This includes the use of hardware-based trust extensions bound to both local and remote applications of the Digital Identity Wallet.

2) Decentralized Identity Solution: UBITECH will contribute towards the implementation of a decentralized identity solution, adhering to SSI principles and enabling seamless integration with existing federated identity management systems. The solution will allow for secure, scalable, and privacy-respecting identity management in real-world environments.

3) Privacy-Preserving Techniques: UBITECH will support the integration advanced privacy features, such as selective disclosure and unlinkability, into the LICORICE Wallet. These privacy features will rely on innovative cryptographic approaches like privacy-preserving Attribute-Based Credentials (p-ABC) and zero-knowledge proofs.

4) Biometric Authentication: UBITECH will work towards the realization of secure biometric authentication solutions that balance privacy and verifiability. These solutions will provide robust privacy protections while ensuring that no sensitive information is leaked during the authentication process.
