UBITECH discusses about 5G embedded trust and attestation at EuCNC FAST 2021

Chris Aslanoglou and Vanias Apostolopoulos, with the support and guidance of Thanos Xirofotos and Dr George Katsikas, all of them members of the Network Softwarization and Internet of Things (NSIT) research group of UBITECH, have participated in the latest OSM#11 Hackfest, which was held online between May 31 and June 04 2021. Our team employed state-of-the-art packaging solutions (i.e., Juju charms) to package the popular PowerDNS network function (NF) and successfully onboarded this NF atop Kubernetes through OSM Release TEN.

UBITECH becomes an interconnected member of the Pleiades IoT Innovation Cluster, that is established by UniSystems following the successful funding grant from the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI) of the Hellenic Ministry of Development and Investments, and aims at developing and promoting IoT technological innovation through coordinated efforts of its members (research centers, universities, large companies, SMEs with specific expertise and start-ups), each one playing its own and significant role in the ecosystem, through a range of extended synergies.

The first review of the PolicyCLOUD H2020-870675 project (https://policycloud.eu/) was successfully held by the European Commission on the 19th of May 2021. The PolicyCLOUD project aims to harness the potential of digitisation, big data and cloud technologies to improve the modelling, creation and implementation of policy. The project addresses challenges faced by many businesses and public administrations for improving how they make policy decisions by accessing and using data. The PolicyCLOUD consortium successfully presented the project results, where UBITECH’s Computing Systems, Software and Services research group displayed the work done on the Data Governance model, as well as on the overall Protection and Privacy Enforcement. More specifically, UBITECH’s role is to fulfil the need to acquire and manage the data that will be used by PolicyCLOUD, as well as to provide the tools that can be used to control data in the different phases of the data lifecycle. The reviewers and the PO were very satisfied with the overall results of the project and provided some really interesting feedback and recommendations for future work.

The short paper entitled “Enabling the Big Data Pipelines on the Computing Continuum”, co-authored by UBITECH, has been accepted by the 15th International Conference on Research Challenges in Information Science (RCIS 2021), held online between 11-14 May, 2021. Mr. Giannis Ledakis, Head of the Computing Systems, Software and Services research group of UBITECH, and his co-authors present the overall vision of the DataCloud Research and Innovation Action, which is the creation of a novel paradigm for Big Data pipeline processing over heterogeneous resources encompassing the Computing Continuum, covering the complete lifecycle of managing Big Data pipelines.

Each year over 250, 000 children slip through the net in the European Union. For this sensitive issue, Ubitech has stepped forward with an innovative solution that can help the investigation of missing children as well as unaccompanied refugee minors cases. The successful case of the ChildRescue project was presented in the CORDIS magazine (Harnessing collective intelligence to find missing children | Results In Brief | CORDIS | European Commission (europa.eu), the European Commission’s primary source of results from the EU projects framework, as a strong example that the combination of novel technologies and initiatives with powerful social impact can bring about outstanding results to society.

The PUZZLE H2020 Innovation Action will help SMEs to dynamically monitor, forecast, assess and manage security, privacy, and personal data protection risks through the usage of targeted cybersecurity management services. In order to provide truly valuable services through the PUZZLE Marketplace, the PUZZLE consortium needs first to discover the cybersecurity needs of SMEs, both from the perspective of cybersecurity service consumers but also from the side of service providers. Thus, the PUZZLE consortium organizes a webinar series (in two parts), wherein PUZZLE is looking for answers and conversation to raise cybersecurity awareness and help everyone be safeguarded against cyber-threats. In this context, UBITECH co-organizes, today, the first part of the webinar series that will be especially focused on exploring the current cybersecurity landscape and status of SMEs. Through the PUZZLE value propositions, the audience will get a taste of some of the cutting-edge technologies in cybersecurity and discover new ways to adopt or provide cybersecurity services.
