UBITECH, through its Head of Digital Security and Trusted Computing Research Group, Dr. Thanassis Giannetsos, is represented in the ISO/TC 307 body (https://www.iso.org/committee/6266604.html) which focuses on the standardization of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. ISO/TC 307, Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies Technical Committee, has been set up to meet the growing need for standardization in this area by providing internationally agreed ways of working with it to improve security, privacy and facilitate worldwide use of the technology through better interoperability. Target working groups include: (i) ISO/TC 307/JWG 4 on Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies and IT Security techniques, (ii) ISO/TC 307/WG 2 on Security, Privacy and Identity Management, and (iii) ISO/TC 307/WG 3 on Smart Contracts and their applications.

The first FIDE Online World Corporate Chess Championship, organized by the International Chess Federation and Chess.com, constitutes an online team competition that takes place on February 19-21, 2021. Companies in industries spanning from finance to tech, covering countries all around the world, will unite in this event to grow the game of chess and showcase its importance.

Continue reading UBITECH is excited to be the only Greek participant at the 1st FIDE Online World Corporate Chess Championship

After 3 years of fruitful collaboration with exciting research partners across Europe, the Digital Security & Trusted Computing Group of UBITECH proudly presented its research outcomes to the final contractual review meeting for the FutureTPM H2020 co-funded research project (Grant Agreement No 779391 – https://futuretpm.eu/) that took place virtually on February 18, 2021. UBITECH, as the leader of WP4, entitled “Run-time Risk Assessment and Vulnerability Analysis” and WP6, entitled “FutureTPM Demonstrators and Performance Evaluation”, presented the Holistic Risk Assessment approach aimed to safeguard TPM-enabled decentralised system architectures in light of the emergence of Quantum Computing era. The Run-time Risk Assessment approach blended with novel Remote Attestation mechanisms is able to guarantee the operational assurance of systems by attesting their configuration integrity and run-time behaviour. In addition, UBITECH presented the FutureTPM integrated framework that provides a unified environment for the new generation of TPM-based solutions including hardware, software and virtualization environments, by incorporating robust and physically secured Quantum-Resistant cryptographic primitives along with run-time operational assurance and risk assessment mechanisms. The reviewers and the PO were extremely satisfied with the results and provided some feedback and recommendations for future work. UBITECH will continue working towards future proofing the connected world of tomorrow.

The technological concept of the Int5Gent holistic 5G system platform has been presented today at the 5G-PPP webinar introducing the New 5G Core Technologies Innovation Projects. The Int5Gent presentation, that has been delivered by the project’s technical manager Dr Dimitris Klonidis from UBITECH, has highlighted the main objectives and innovations of the Int5Gent project. In particular, Int5Gent envisions a solution that provides a holistic 5G end-to-end system approach through the development of an integrated platform that spans over a) innovative fronthaul connectivity technologies at the data plane, b) efficient and standardized network resource management and network interconnection solutions at the network control plane, and c) intelligent service deployment and management through UBITECH’s Vertical Application Orchestrator (VAO) at the service layer. Thus, Int5Gent constitutes one of the unique attempts in 5G activities that merges together solutions over different layers thus offering a complete 5G platform for experimentation at both the data and service layer.

Advanced technologies, as IIOT and AI, will shape the future business in Industry. Predictive maintenance is a key domain to start with and implement Industrie 4.0 strategies. UPTIME is a modular and flexible platform integrating components based on the most advanced technologies to implement predictive maintenance in your production systems. It operates successfully in 3 different industrial domains. During this interactive event, the participants were  introduced to the UPTIME Platform Demo Space and had a chance to have open discussions with industries that have implemented UPTIME technologies. UPTIME end users have shared the participants the concrete benefits, the issues they have faced and their best practices.

UBITECH participates at the virtual kick-off meeting (January 28-29, 2021), hosted by UniSystems, of the GLASS Research and Innovation Action, officially started on January 1st, 2021. The project is funded by European Commission under Horizon 2020 Programme (Grant Agreement No. 959879) and spans on the period January 2021 – December 2023. The GLASS project caters for a ‘European Common Services Web’, bringing closer together citizens, businesses and European governments. The project introduces a citizen-centric e-governance model that enables beneficiaries to participate in a network for big data exchange and service delivery, which is by design digital, efficient, cost-effective, interoperable, cross-border, secure and promotes the once-only priority.

Continue reading UBITECH undertakes the technical coordination of the GLASS Research and Innovation Action towards a Single Sign-on eGovernance paradigm based on a distributed and trusted file exchange network

The paper entitled “A Perfect Match: Converging and Automating Privacy and Security Impact Assessment On-the-Fly” has been accepted and published online at the Special Issue “Information and Future Internet Security, Trust and Privacy” of the Future Internet (ISSN 1999-5903), an open access journal published monthly online by MDPI. The UBITECH’s Digital Security and Trusted Computing research group proposes the APSIA methodology, which stands for Automated Privacy and Security Impact Assessment. APSIA is powered by the use of interdependency graph models and data processing flows used to create a digital reflection of the cyber-physical environment of an organisation. Along with this model, we present a novel and extensible privacy risk scoring system for quantifying the privacy impact triggered by the identified vulnerabilities of the ICT infrastructure of an organisation.

After 3 years of an exciting R&D journey, the UBITECH’s Privacy-preserving Distributed Machine Learning research group proudly delivered and integrated the Data Toolkit and the Information-driven Networking Mechanisms in the BigDataStack infrastructure management system. The Data Toolkit and the Information-driven Networking Mechanisms exhibited their applicability in the three use cases related with automated analytic pipelines and software defined networking mechanisms for real-time ship management, connected consumer and smart insurance applications. The BigDataStack project (Grant Agreement No 779747) had a successful final – virtual – review by the European Commission on the 27th of January 2021. We are happy to be part of such an enthusiastic team and sad that the BigDataStack project is over! BigDataStack delivers a complete pioneering stack that drives decisions according to data aspects based on current and past application and infrastructure deployments. Therefore, the BigDataStack infrastructure management system is scalable and adaptable at runtime, able to address the emerging needs of big data operations and data-intensive applications.

The first contractual virtual review meeting for the SDN-microSENSE H2020 Innovation Action co-funded research project (https://www.sdnmicrosense.eu/) with external reviewers and the Project Officer from the EC side took place on January 26, 2021, wherein the SDN-microSENSE consortium successfully presented the results of the work of the project during the first 20 months of the project. The SDN-microSENSE project intends to provide a set of secure, privacy-enabled and resilient to cyberattacks tools, thus ensuring the normal operation of Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES) as well as the integrity and the confidentiality of communications. UBITECH presented the 2nd Objective of the project related to the SDN-microSENSE Risk Assessment Framework (S-RAF) which includes iterative risk and vulnerability assessments on existing energy value chain assets including processes and personnel. The reviewers and the Project Officer were satisfied with the results and provided some feedback and recommendations for the future work. The SDN-microSENSE consortium is enthusiastic about continuing their work in the project.

The scientific paper entitled “PrEstoCloud: A Novel Framework for Data-Intensive Multi-Cloud, Fog, and Edge Function-as-a-Service Applications”, co-authored by UBITECH, has been accepted and published online at the Information Resources Management Journal (IRMJ) of IGI Global. Giannis Ledakis, Head of UBITECH’s Computing Systems, Software and Services research group, and his co-authors from NTUA and JSI review prominent fog computing frameworks and discuss some of the challenges and requirements of Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) -enabled applications. Moreover, they propose a novel framework able to dynamically manage multi-cloud, fog, and edge resources and to deploy data-intensive applications developed using the FaaS paradigm. The proposed framework leverages the FaaS paradigm in a way that improves the average service response time of data-intensive applications by a factor of three regardless of the underlying multi-cloud, fog, and edge resource infrastructure.
