UBITECH participates at the OSM#11 Hackfest addressing PowerDNS NF packaging and onboarding to OSM Release TEN

Chris Aslanoglou and Vanias Apostolopoulos, with the support and guidance of Thanos Xirofotos and Dr George Katsikas, all of them members of the Network Softwarization and Internet of Things (NSIT) research group of UBITECH, have participated in the latest OSM#11 Hackfest, which was held online between May 31 and June 04 2021. Our team employed state-of-the-art packaging solutions (i.e., Juju charms) to package the popular PowerDNS network function (NF) and successfully onboarded this NF atop Kubernetes through OSM Release TEN.

This challenging task entailed (i) the quick familiarization with Juju charms and bundles and the Charmed Operator Framework, (ii) packaging of the NF using NFV-standardized descriptors, (iii) the successful NF instantiation, as well as (iv) successful Day-1 (NF initialization) and Day-2 (NF reconfiguration) operations on the deployed instance. On the last day of the hackfest, UBITECH’s colleagues successfully demonstrated their achievements and were awarded with a certificate of participation. The source-code to re-produce our PowerDNS NF onboarding through OSM is publicly available on our GitLab.

In an attempt to further strengthen our cloud and networking solutions, UBITECH’s NSIT members have committed to more open source initiatives and contributions in the near future.
