UBITECH co-authors a scientific paper on performance evaluation of service chains placement algorithms for Edge Computing at ITC30

A scientific paper entitled “Performance Evaluation of Service Functions Chain Placement Algorithms in Edge Cloud” has been co-authored by University of Würzburg and UBITECH, and is presented at the International Teletraffic Congress ITC 30, that is held September 4-7, 2018, at the University of Vienna, Austria, and constitutes the 30th edition of the international flagship congress in the field of networking science and practice. In this paper, Dr Anastasios Zafeiropoulos and his co-authors propose four placement algorithms that aim to efficiently place the Service Functions Chains (SFCs) in servers with regard to minimizing service response time and resource utilization. Herein, heuristic approaches are evaluated against optimal solutions for the placement problems, which are formulated by using Integer Linear Programming (ILP). They evaluate and compare these placement strategies in a simulator. The result shows that the optimized solutions produce lowest service response time and least server utilization in all types of simulated SFCs.

UBITECH presents a scientific paper on adaptive Edge and Fog Computing for video surveillance at ISS-Cloud workshop of IISA 2018

A scientific paper entitled “Adaptive Edge and Fog Computing Paradigm for Wide Area Video and Audio Surveillance” has been edited by UBITECH and is presented at the Intelligent Systems and Services for Cloud Accessible, Data-intensive Computing (ISS-Cloud) Workshop that takes place as part of the 9th International Conference on Information, Intelligence, Systems and Applications (IISA 2018), hosted between 23 – 25 July, 2018 in Zakynthos, Greece. In this paper, UBITECH describes a novel, adaptive architecture and that builds on top of a distributed computing paradigm and is ideal for smart surveillance systems that can utilize resources at Cloud, Fog and Edge, documenting the main architectural components, the hardware options and key software components of the system – incorporating Cloud, Edge and Fog Computing concepts and artifacts. Edge Computing is realized by a camera embedded system, Cloud Computing with the usage of public accessible infrastructure for data processing and Fog Computing for the processing and data fusion of video streams in small areas.

UBITECH co-authors a scientific paper on holistic devops stack for big data driven applications at Big Data Congress 2018 in San Francisco, CA

A scientific paper entitled “BigDataStack: A Holistic Data-driven Stack for Big Data Applications and Operations” has been co-authored by UBITECH and is presented at the IEEE International Congress on Big Data (Big Data Congress 2018) that takes place between 2-7 July, 2018 in San Francisco, California, USA. In this paper, Dr. Panagiotis Gouvas and his co-authors present the architecture of a complete stack (namely BigDataStack), based on a frontrunner infrastructure management system that drives decisions according to data aspects, thus being fully scalable, runtime adaptable and high-performant to address the needs of big data operations and data-intensive applications. Furthermore, the stack goes beyond purely infrastructure elements by introducing techniques for the dimensioning of big data applications, modelling and analysis of processes as well as the provision of data-as-a-service exploiting a proposed seamless analytics framework.

UBITECH’s co-authored manuscript on climate-related, georeferenced information management has been accepted and published online at the Springer Journal on Earth Science Informatics

Following a peer-review process, Springer Earth Science Informatics has accepted to publish a scientific manuscript, authored by UBITECH, University of Aegean and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,, entitled “Development of a Spatial Database and Web-GIS for the Climate of Greece”. Dimitris Ntalaperas and his co-authors present the design and implementation of a spatial database and a web-GIS application that allow the management, visualization and analysis of data that are directly or indirectly related to climate and its future projections in Greece. Emphasis is given to the design decisions made in order to fulfill the requirements of flexible data querying and reporting, and of maintenance cost minimization. Cartographic layers for climatic and other parameters are dynamically produced through database views and geographic web services. The web-GIS provides user-friendly cartographic operations for visualizing and manipulating thematic maps, as well as reporting services for selecting, displaying and downloading climatic values for selected areas.
