UBITECH in Pre-FIA Athens 2014 Workshop on Key Enabling Technologies of Cloud Computing

UBITECH has participated in the Pre-FIA Workshop entitled “From data services to cloud services: concepts, applications and visions”, which took place at the Megaron Athens International Conference Center on Monday, March 17th, 2014. The workshop looked at a future of industrial leadership reached with the key enabling technology of Cloud Computing. A future in which a multi-cloud ecosystem exists, within which enterprises’ IT environments are transformed into a matrix of interwoven infrastructure, platform and application services delivered by multiple providers.

Academic and industrial stakeholders from various ongoing cloud computing projects (Broker@Cloud, GloNet, PaaSage, Cloud4SOA, PaaSport) presented the latest developments in the field and discuss about concepts, applications, and visions that will shape future multi-cloud enterprise ecosystems. In particular, our R&D Director, Dr. Panagiotis Gouvas has introduced concepts and opportunities on applications on multi-clouds based on our experiences from the PaaSport FP7 co-funded research project.

RENAPER Data Exchange Platform implemented by UBITECH allows the secure interchange of Civil Status Certificates among the Provinces of the Republic of Argentina

The Secure Data Exchange Platform implemented by UBITECH for the “Registro Nacional de las Personas” (RENAPER) of the Ministry of Interior and Transport of the Republic of Argentina has been tested and piloted in four provinces of the Argentinian Republic, namely Neuquen, Tucumán, Corrientes and Formosa, during March and April 2014. The successfully executed test cases included the exchange of digitally signed birth, marriage and death certificates, allowing the functional evaluation and acceptance testing of the electronic platform and the familiarization of the provincial public servants with the platform’s digital formats, services and functionality.

Going a step further, the Province of Neuquen, due to the advanced stage of digitization of its civil status records and the sophisticated provincial interconnection plan, has achieved to utilize the electronic platform for exchanging digitally signed certificates between the province and other provincial or federal legal entities requesting civil status documents from citizens.

PaaSport: New EC co-funded research project on Cloud PaaS markets

UBITECH has participated in the Athens kick-off meeting of the PaaSport research project, officially started on December 1st, 2013. The project is partially funded by European Commission under FP7 Research for SME Associations programme (Grant Agreement No 605193) and runs in the period December 2013-November 2016.

The PaaSport project, fostering the creation of a “semantically-enhanced marketplace of interoperable platform-as-a-service offerings for the deployment and migration of business applications of SMEs”, focuses on resolving the data and application portability issues that exist in the Cloud PaaS market through a flexible and efficient deployment and migration approach.

UBITECH has introduced in PaaSport the concept of “Semantically Interoperable PaaS Solutions”, as Cloud PaaS systems and offerings with the ability to overcome the semantic incompatibilities and communicate, referring to the ability of applications and their data to seamlessly be deployed on and/or migrated between Cloud PaaS offerings that are using the same technological background but different data (information) models and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Moreover, the role of UBITECH in PaaSport aims at the implementation of a set of CAMP-compatible adapters for PaaS platforms that handles mainly the deployment, undeployment, start, stop and migration of an application on a selected PaaS offering. Finally, UBITECH will utilize the corporate Cloud infrastructure, comprised of an openstack and a cloudfoundry deployment, for the support and execution of value-added demonstrators and scenarios proving the business benefits of the PaaSport concepts and tools.

LinDA: New EC co-funded research project on Linked Data management and analytics

UBITECH has participated in the kick-off meeting that took place in Athens of the LinDA research project officially started on December 1st, 2013. The project is partially funded by European Commission under FP7-ICT research programme (Grant Agreement No 610565) and runs in the period December 2013-November 2015.

The LinDA project, entitled “Enabling Linked Data and Analytics for SMEs by renovating public sector information”, addresses one of the most significant challenges of the usage and publication of Linked Data, the renovation and conversion of existing data formats into structures that support the semantic enrichment and interlinking of data. The set of tools provided by LinDA will assist enterprises, especially SMEs which often cannot afford the development and maintenance of dedicated information analysis and management departments, in efficiently developing novel data analytical services that are linked to the available public data and enterprise data.

The role of UBITECH in LinDA aims at the implementation of libraries and applications for end-user – driven Linked Data Analytics and Data Mining, based on existing Java-based components (like Weka and Java ML) extended to point to RDF as source format, specifically targeted to leverage the potential of Linked Data sources, especially in terms of pattern and link analysis. Moreover, UBITECH will support the end-user SMEs for the adoption and deployment of the LinDA solutions as well as the enrichment of the LinDA visualisation applications library for the business intelligence & management consultants market, the environmental sector and the media industry.

UBITECH co-authors a scientific paper on molecular clustering at BIBE 2013

A scientific paper entitled “Molecular Clustering via Knowledge Mining from Biomedical Scientific Corpora” has been accepted for oral presentation at the 13th IEEE International Conference on BioInformatics and BioEngineering (BIBE 2013), which is held in Chania, Greece, at November 10-13, 2013. Panagiotis Hasapis, Dimitrios Ntalaperas, Dimitrios Alexandrou, Thanassis Bouras and their co-authors argue for a novel architecture that allows the extraction of argumentation clauses that might exist in publications, in order to perform molecular clustering on referenced molecules. Grammar rules are defined and used to identify sentences corresponding to argumentation being present in publications. The references of those molecules are then compiled as lists that include their structure definition in SMILES format. These lists are given as input to virtual screening tools and then to a molecular clustering tool, with the ultimate goal to classify molecules that are known to be prone to specific diseases, thus leading to the discovery of new drugs.
